LOQ UdeC Dioxins and Furans Laboratory Spanish Version
“Dioxins and Furans” is a general term that defines a group of 210 chlorinated organic compounds. These compounds are highly persistent in the environment and are produced as by-product of different industrial processes that include chlorine, organic matter and heat.
The Universidad de Concepcion Dioxins Laboratory (LADIOX-UDEC) analyzes the seventeen congeners of Dioxins and Furans considered in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP´s). For that purpose the laboratory has developed methods that allow the extraction, cleanup and analysis of dioxins and furans, both in marine and terrestrial environmental matrices, which includes: water, biological tissue and solid samples such as soil, sediment and sludge.
In the Universidad de Concepcion Dioxins Laboratory samples are processed using the latest generation of automated systems for extraction and sample preparation from FMS, Boston USA. Solid samples are extracted using the Pressurized Liquid Extraction technique (PLE), whereas liquid samples are extracted using Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) techniques. Dioxins and furans contained in the extracts are isolated from other pollutants present in the sample using an automated procedure, i.e., Power Prep System (from FMS, Boston USA) , ensuring the reliability and repeatability of the analysis.
In the Universidad de Concepcion Dioxins Laboratory, dioxins and furans are quantified by HRGC/HRMS with a T hermo DFS High Resolution Mass Spectrometer, one of the most sensitive instruments built for this purpose. Also the laboratory have a Gas Chromatograph coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (TSQ Thermo GC-MS/MS), used for screening of dioxins and furans in samples.
All Methods developed in the Universidad de Concepcion Dioxins Laboratory are based on the protocol U.S-EPA-1613 revision b.
